Hal went to South Africa as a husband and father, believing he was entering his wife’s past. He had no way of knowing he was stepping into a country that would transform him and become the backdrop for a gripping kidnapping thriller.  

In Southern California, the Bergers appeared to be a young family at the beginning of everything. Hal was building a career in mergers and acquisitions.  

His wife, Charlize, carried with her the beauty, history, and contradictions of her Afrikaner roots. Their son, Alex, was curious, bright, and deeply loved.  

When Charlize asked Hal to travel with her and Alex to South Africa, the request seemed simple on the surface: a visit home, a chance for Alex to know part of his heritage, and an opportunity for Hal to understand the country that had shaped the woman he married.  

But from the moment he arrived, South Africa unsettled him.  

Its beauty was undeniable. The landscape was vast, colorful, and alive. The bush seemed to breathe. The light carried a yellow heat.  

The country revealed itself through sound and smell as much as sight — birds and animals beyond the trees, burning refuse near settlements, unfamiliar voices, open sky, and an undercurrent of danger that never fully announced itself.  

Hal had entered a place where history was not past. Apartheid, racial violence, inherited loyalties, and old wounds still lived beneath daily life.  

The divide between his American assumptions and the Afrikaner world around him grew sharper with every day.  

What began as a family journey slowly became something more ominous — a kidnapping thriller that tested the bonds of love and trust.  

A marriage fractured. A child became the center of a cross-continental struggle. And Hal found himself inside a country whose systems — courts, police, embassies, and governments — would not protect him in the ways he believed they would.  

The man who arrived in South Africa was a father, a husband, and a professional who believed problems could be solved through reason, law, and persistence.  

The man who emerged would be forced to learn another language entirely: survival.

In that world, Hal was no longer simply fighting to bring his son home.

Over The Edge is the true story of a father pushed beyond the systems he trusted, into a world of beauty, danger, loyalty, corruption, and unexpected humanity.
